No let up in ST demand

Imphal, January 28 2023:
There is no let up in the movement for addition of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Constitution as a number of women staged a demonstration at Kwakeithel, supporting the movement, today.
At the site of the demonstration, the protesters displayed banners with inscriptions demanding ST status for Meetei/Meitei before Manipur is included in the railway network of India and a message to forward the latest ethnography and socio-economic report of the ethnic group to the Centre.
The protesters claimed that granting ST tag to the Meetei/Meitei populace is the only means to secure the future of the ethnic group.

Notably, many MLAs of the State have already expresed their support to the movement spearheaded by the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) while some organisations based in the hills have raised objection to it by dubbing the demand of STDCM as illegitimate.
In view of the emerging difference of opinion over the demand, the STDCM has earlier appealed to all organisations and individuals who have been rendering support to them to refrain from engaging in any activity which may dilute the purpose of the movement.
Even though most valley MLAs have endorsed the movement individually, the State Government hasn't made any concrete statement on sending the reports which the Central Government has been seeking for over a decade to ascertain whether Meetei/Meitei can be added in the ST list.
It may also be mentioned that the Meitei Pangal Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee (MPSTDC) has also been demanding inclusion of Meitei Pangals in the ST list and the committee submitted a memorandum to a few MLAs since the past few days.
