Village chief held; brown sugar seized, peddlers escape

Imphal, January 28 2023:
A joint team of Nungba police station, Noney forest division, SDO Nungba, 39 Assam Rifles and Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation Manipur (RNSOM) destroyed illegal poppy plantations in an area of around 1 acre in Nungthut village area on Saturday.
Police also arrested chief of Nungthut village, Paoja-hen Singson alias Hena (46) son of late Setkholien Singson in connection with the poppy plantations that was found carried out under the jurisdiction of his village.
The poppy farm is located at a distance of about 23 km from Nungba PS.
A case has been registered against the village chief under ND&PS Act at Nungba PS.
Meanwhile, troops of 20 Assam Rifles reportedly seized 525 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 1,05,00,000 from near Khudengthabi village playground on Saturday.
According to sources, based on specific input regarding movement of contraband items using skirt route to bypass PVCP, the AR laid an ambush near the school playground from around 3 am and spotted two suspicious looking individuals carrying gunny bags on their backs at about 7.45ar;i.On being challenged, the two individuals escaped into the jungle leaving behind the gunny bags filled with charcoal.
On thorough checking of the gunny bags, 12 soap cases of suspected brown sugar concealed in plastic bags were recovered.
The recovered items have been handed over to Moreh police for necessary legal action, it added.
