Imphal, February 11 2023:
The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) continues to press the Government to add Meetei/Meitei in the Sche-duled Tribe (ST) list by holding a demonstration at Wangjing Keithel today.
The demonstration was organised by STDCM Thoubal district along with the womenfolk of Wangjing Keithel.
One of the demonstrators, Leishangthem Rasheshori said that the demand being raised by STDCM is valid and necessary.
She also said that they support STDCM's movement as the survival of Meetei/Meitei has been threatened by different factors such as demographic imbalance and influx of migrants, to name a few.
She urged the Government to forward the recommendation sought by the Centre so as to verify the authenticity of the demand .

Majority of the valley MLAs have also given assurances of support to the STDCM in their endeavour despite opposition by ATSUM and some tribal bodies.
Significantly, the Government of India in 2013 had written to the State Government to send necessary recommendations for its consideration to include Meeteis/Meiteis in the ST list.
However, the Manipur Government has not yet sent the recommendation sought by the Centre.
STDCM has asserted that if the Ministers and the MLAs truly believe in the cause of the Meitei/Meetei and are true to what they stated, they should bring up the issue and discuss it in the State Assembly.
