Imphal, February 11 2023:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a sit-in protest in front of Congress Bhawan, BT Road, here, on Saturday condemning the arson attempt at the party's office on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, MPCC general secretary Wahidur Rahman remarked that the brazen arson attempt in a high security zone, located closely to the Raj Bhavan and the Chief Minister's office is not the first time to happen in the area.
Previously, the office of Congress party faced numerous attacks including arson and attempt to destroy the gate.
This clearly indicates that there is nothing to cherish about the law-and-order situation in the state, he said, while adding that all of the above are an attempt to annihilate the opposition party i.e., Congress.
Demanding the government to arrest the person(s) responsible for the arson attempt within 24 hours, he asserted that the government never wait in sending people who criticise the government on social media or any other media, to jail.
However, its silence over the attempted arson with a petrol bomb against another major political party is inexcusable.
Wahidur pointed out that no action had been taken up in any of the attacks against Congress' office.
The police also have never visited the scene or investigated the cause of the matter or the people responsible for the same.
Instead, it is trying to arrest the party's youth leader N Popilal, which is condemnable.
Thus, the general secretary demanded the government to withdraw its allegations levelled against Popilal at the earliest.
Meanwhile, while the party members were staging the protest amidst heavy security, two people came in a red Swift car and hurled eggs in front of the party's office around 4 pm on Saturday.
Condemning the incident, Wahidur Rahman said that it would be best for the government to investigate who carried out the attack.
Such brazen attack in Imphal city despite huge presence of security is an act of trying to drive away Congress, which could also be regard as an attempted against the people.
In addition to being the largest party in India, Congress is also the party which helped free the country from the colonial yoke of the British.
The free India we now live in could be attributed to the efforts and sacrifices of the Congress party.
As such, the government 's act of turning a blind eye to repeated attacks against the party is unfathomable, the general secretary remarked and demanded the government to arrest and punish the people responsible at the earliest, failing which the party along with other organisations of the state will launch intense agitations.
