RTE nuances imparted to school headmasters in Ukhrul

Ukhrul, October 24 2012: A One-Day Seminar on Right to Education (RTE) and School Administration was organized for the heads of schools under Autonomous District Council (ADC) of Ukhrul on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the seminar held at Tangkhul Theological Association hall at Hamleikhong, Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul R.Sudhan, who is also the Chairman of District Board of Education (DBE) under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), delved on the significance of RTE Act, 2009 and the responsibilities enshrined for the teachers towards the children.

He appealed to the heads of schools not to consider the Act as another government routine programme and said that it is a tool for the betterment of children and society at large.

More than 150 school headmasters and headmistresses from the Ukhrul districts attended the seminar.

In Ukhrul district, the ADC is presently managing 158 primary schools having 4013 students and 1060 teachers.

Ukhrul ADC chief executive officer Luckyson N Kashung also exhorted the participants of the seminar by focusing on pertinent points to revive the dying government educational institutions.

He emphasized that the schools should be run in a manner how it is being done in privately-owned ones and observed that the welfare of teachers and students should be placed among top priorities.

Kashung also said that there should be co-ordination with parents for improvement of schools and initiate prompt action against report of any lapses to relevant authorities.

SSA consultant Grace Jajo, the resource person of the seminar, highlighted the features of Right to Education Act 2009 and the need of every headmaster to understand the requirements for proper implementation of the Act.

Emphasizing the need for successful implementation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education, she stated that it depends a lot on headmasters and headmistresses as they are the key in disseminating the message to teachers, students, community and parents.

In the course of the seminar, there was a dramatic scene with the participating headmaster engaging in debate with the resource person.

The seminar was almost reduced to a farce but for the timely intervention from other participants.
