Road after Mary Kom on the menu

Even as a furore has been kicked up over the purported statements made to the media at Aizawl on October 21, IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip today announced that the possibility of naming a road in Greater Imphal area after Olympic medallist MC Mary Kom would be discussed at the level of the Chief Minister soon.
Ngamthang announced this during a felicitation cum thanks giving prayer programme organised to felicitate the boxer at the Kanglatongbi Orphanage Ground.
The function was organised by the Karong/Kilong/Sampar/Shongthu Organising Committee and the people settled in and around Kanglatongbi.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Ngamthang Haokip that to acknowledge the achievement of Mary Kom, due discussion would be held at the level of the Chief Minister to study if a road stretch at Greater Imphal area can be named after her.
It is a matter of pride for the people of Manipur that MC Mary Kom was able to land the Bronze medal at the London Olympics.
It is a blessing that the world today knows who is Mary Kom, he added.
Elaborating on how the State Government had acknowledged her achievements in the boxing ring, Ngamthang said that as soon as news of her getting the Bronze medal was received here, the State Cabinet decided to promote her to the post of SP.
On top of this three acres of land were allotted for her academy, added Ngamthang.
Acknowledging however that the mandatory official orders for the promotion as well as land allotment have not been issued till date, Ngamthang assured that he would personally take the responsibility of ensuring that the requisite orders are issued once the Chief Minister returns from Delhi.
Ngamthang Haokip also expressed hope that Mary Kom would be able to inspire the younger generation and Manipur would produce many more outstanding sports personalities in the future.
