Imagi Meira locks Assembly gate, 7 held

Imphal, July 31 2026: Imagi Meira members locked the gate of the State Assembly today denouncing Government's failure to convene a special monsoon session and discuss five demands it had raised earlier.

The protest in front of the Assembly led to the detention of Imagi Meira president Th Sujata and 6 other women.

The seven detainees had not been released at the time this report was filed.

Notably, a large number of Imagi Meira members and volunteers had marched to the Assembly after a public meeting at Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai Panthoibi community hall demanding a meeting with elected representatives.

A commotion broke out when security forces locked the gate and stopped the womenfolk from entering the Assembly premises.

When allegedly told that there were no MLAs present in the Assembly, the womenfolk sat in front of the gate in protest, and later locked the gate themselves.

During the commotion at the Assembly gate, Imagi Meira president Thokchom Sujata said the organisation had recently written to the Governor, Chief Minister and Speaker urging them to convene a special/monsoon session of the State Assembly within 10 days to discuss issues facing the State.

Sujata said Imagi Meira has been urging the Government to swiftly introduce and pass a Bill to protect indigenous communities.

The Imagi Meira is further urging the Government to expedite the return and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons, and allow village volunteers to operate under a legal framework.

The representation submitted to the Government also urged it to enhance investigations into cases related to the Manipur crisis, Sujata said.

However, even days after the representation was submitted, the Government has not taken up any positive steps to convene a session of the Assembly and discuss the demands, Sujata said.

Imagi Meira strongly condemns the lackadaisical attitude of the Government.

When the State is facing issues on multiple fronts, it seems reluctant to take any positive steps to resolve the crises, Sujata said.

The Government must convene a session of the Assembly within 10 days, and all the Members of House should discuss the issues plaguing Manipur and take resolutions to resolve them, Sujata said.
