Kangpokpi IDPs demand immediate release of pending DBT, set 5-day deadline

Kangpokpi, July 31 2026: Thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), including displaced students from different parts of Sadar Hills, staged a protest at Kangpokpi district headquarters on Friday, demanding immediate restoration and disbursement of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) assistance by the Government of Manipur.

Organised under the aegis of the Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee (KDIDWC), the protest witnessed participation from displaced families, students, women, elderly persons and social workers.

Several Kuki-Zo leaders, including Dr Lamtinthang Haokip, also joined the protest in solidarity with the displaced community.

The protesters carried placards highlighting difficulties in accessing food, medicines and education, besides demanding equal treatment for displaced persons residing both inside and outside relief camps.

Later, the KDIDWC submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, urging the Government to immediately release the pending DBT and continue the monthly financial assistance until displaced families are safely resettled.

The committee expressed concern that despite July drawing to a close, not a single registered IDP in Kangpokpi district had received the DBT for the month, resulting in severe hardships among displaced families.

The protesting IDPs issued a five-day ultimatum to the Government to release the pending DBT, warning that failure to meet the deadline would compel them to intensify their agitation through various democratic means.

They also held the Government responsible for any consequences arising from continued inaction on their demands.
