Imphal, July 10 2021:
As part of the nationwide protest demanding delivery of benefits for scheme workers particularly ASHA, Anganwadi and Midday meal workers, scheme workers of the state also staged a sit-in protest at Irawat Bhavan complex here on Saturday.
In a statement released to the press, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) secretary A Saratchandra said that ASHAs receive only Rs 2000 per month as incentive even though they are contributing immensely in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
Although the recognition of ASHA workers is much appreciated, it would be better for the government to formulate some kind of regulations.
On the other hand, midday meal workers are paid honorarium of Rs 1000-2000 for 10 months, which the government needs to seriously review.
The honorarium being given to ASHA, Anganwadi and midday meal workers need to be increased, taking into account of the present times.
"Other states have allocated allowances in the budget for scheme workers in addition to the amount paid by the centre.
The states are also paying honorariums and incentives on top of this.
Thus, the government of Manipur should take a firm decision in this regard at the earliest," the secretary said, while cautioning of launching intense agitations in case of failing to do so.
He further demanded recognizing of the workers as employees and payment of Rs 18,000 as salary per month.
The sit-in protest was attended by AITUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar, All Manipur ASHA Workers' Union president Ch Purnimasi, treasurer K Sanahanbi, Urban Area leader convenor O Pramodini and H Kunjarani, Midday Meal Workers' Union Manipur president Y Indrani and Anganwadi Workers' Union representatives, Trade Union City District leaders and Imphal District leaders N Subol and others.
