Imphal, July 10 2021:
The Manipuri Student's Federation (MSF) has appealed to the State Government and department concerned to provide adequate water for irrigation and fertilizers at subsidised rates to the farmers at the earliest.
Addressing media persons at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai, MSF general secretary Hijam Roshan said that skyrocketing prices of fertilizers and non availability of adequate water for irrigation during the Covid pandemic is distressing the farmers of the State.
Due to poor rainfall, many of the farmers are unable to start farming activities, he added.
Saying that those who manage to sow paddy seeds by pumping water from nearby lakes and rivers are, on the other hand, facing a problem in procuring fertilizers, he added that MSF condemns selling of fertilizers as high as Rs 1,000 per bag by certain dealers.
Roshan then urged the Government and the Agriculture Department to look into the matter and regulate the price of fertilizers at the earliest.
He also urged the District Agriculture Officers to distribute the allocated fertilizers on time to the farmers.
