16th Meira Paibi Numit observed

The 16th Meira Paibi Numit was observed at Khurai Salanthong Tharo Devi Lampak here today in remembrance of the movement launched by Meira Paibis to remove Disturbed Area Act from the State following mass rape and discrimination of women by CRPF personnel at Langjing in 1980 .
The observance was attended by Prof Khsetri Bimola of Department of Political Science, Manipur University as Chief Guest; Longjam Memchoubi, president of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup as President while Pebam Ibenungsi, president of Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak; Akoijam Janik Leima, president of Momnu Irik Khombi; Phanjoubam Sakhi Leima, president of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ema Lup and Maibam Purnimasi Leima, president of Ching-Tam United Women's Association Kangleipak as Guests of Honor.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Bimola observed that despite knowing that politics is inevitable in the society, people have been exercising their adult franchise to elect their representatives from the 60 constituencies with the belief that their elected leaders will solve problems.
So, political leaders should not take for granted the trust of the people repose on them.
Instead they should come up with good works and measures for the welfare of the people.
Saying that the Disturbed Area Act was lifted from only seven constituencies in 2005 sidelining other areas which are reeling under the impact of AFSPA, she called upon the Meira Paibis to put in concerted efforts for the betterment of the society without indulging in politics and self-interest work.
