Thoubal, May 28 2014:
Villagers of Chandel district repaired the deplorable road stretch from Pallel to Modi village via district headquarters yesterday.
The repair work of the 22 kilometres long road was done under the initiative of Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) following the failure of the State Government to repair it during the last few years.
Since 8 in the morning, a large numbers of villagers including women residing along the road came out with spade and shovels mended the pot holes with pebbles and sand transported by trucks.
Some other drained out the logging water from the middle of the road.
While expressing gratitude to the district administration of Chandel district, Commanding Officer of both 20 Assam Rifles and 8 Manipur Rifles, Contractors' Association of Chandel District, tribe leaders of the seven Naga tribes and villagers for their cooperation and assistance, Ws Kanral Anal President of CNPO said that the repairing work was taken up as the present State Government failed to repair it since the last few years.
The deplorable condition of the road made the people of the district more hapless as more fuels were consumed, vehicles often break down and it also affected the health of the travellers who take the road frequently, said the President.
To prevent further deterioration of the road with the onset of monsoon, the villagers were taking the initiative to repair the road with their own resources, according to the CNPO president.
