North Eastern Council Water Supply schemes for Meghalaya

Imphal, June 16 2014:
The NEC has sanctioned project for "Creating necessary Infrastructure for Storage of water to meet the Emergency needs of the State capital Shillong in the state of Meghalaya" for Rs.1500 lakhs recently, NEC Secretary Sh Ameising Luikham informed today.
Having a combined water storage capacity of 5.6 million litres, the project will meet the emergency need of the Shillong town and its adjoining areas, Luikham stated, adding that the NEC has sanctioned two Detailed Project Reports for Hydro Electric Projects on Nongkohlait River and Umngi River which will have installed capacity of 120 mw and 54 mw respectively at a total cost of Rs.10.02 crore.
NEC has earlier sanctioned 6 more schemes for Meghalaya during 11th and 12th plan period.
The strategy to develop the river basin plan, as envisaged in the Vision 2020 document, was discussed in a meeting held at NEC Secretariat today under the Chairmanship of M..PBezbaruah, Member of North Eastern Council.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary, NEC, Senior Officers of NEC, and Senior Officers from all NE States and Central Agencies Central Water Commission, North East Space Centre etc.
Addressing the State Officials, M.P.Bezbaruah emphasised the need to have a coordination mechanism by the State Government to look into the various aspects of water resource activities like power, irrigation, water shed programme, fisheries, agriculture, horticulture etc.
so as to maximize the utilization of water for the benefit of the people.
Ameising Luikham who took review of all the ongoing NEC funded schemes in the North Eastern States, emphasised that timely completion of the projects/schemes by the implementing agencies is a must for the States to achieve the developmental goals.
He also informed that NEC has funded Anti Erosion - Flood Control, minor irrigation and water supply work in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Mizoram.
