Imphal, March 02 2023:
Demanding the government to take a decision for forwarding the requisite recommendation for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list to the centre during the ongoing Assembly session; Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM) organised protests at various places across the state on Thursday.
A public rally under the aegis of STDCM was also taken out in areas of Lamphel Supermarket, Wangoi Keithel and Thoubal Keithel on Thursday, wherein the protestors shouted slogans demanding inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list.
Vendors of Lamphel Supermarket and volunteers of STDCM attempted to take the rally towards the State Assembly but were intercepted by Lamphel Police.
Speaking on the sidelines, a vendor named Rk Bina described as highly unfortunate that the ministers and MLAs have not taken up the ST issue in the Assembly despite claiming the demand to be justified.
She then said that the people will continue to agitate until the demand is fulfilled.
On the other hand, local clubs/organisations, Meira Paibi associations, vendors and WAFA players of Wangoi formed a human chain demanding inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list.
Similar protests were also staged by vendors and members of various clubs and organisations at different parts of Thoubal district on Thursday.
