Imphal, February 01 2015:
Women Action for Development (WAD) has vehemently condemned the "inhuman act" of Assam Rifles personnel posted in Tangnoupal who allegedly forced a pregnant woman and a paralyzed BP patient who were made to walk 2 kms on Saturday evening at around 5.30 pm.
In a release, WAD Sobita Mangsatabam said the two individuals were subjected to such act despite the fact that they need immediate medical attention.
While condemning the act, the WAD secretary said the Assam Rifles personnel should be "ashamed" of calling themselves as friends of the hill people.
WAD informed the two patients were on their way to a hospital to avail medical facilities when they were detained and prohibited to proceed further at Sita Lamkahi Check point.
The organisation pointed out the actions of the paramilitary forces commanded by an officer from Indian Army violated internationally established and accepted humanitarian laws.
"The barbaric act violates Article 2 and 3 of the Geneva Convention, 1949 that reads as 'Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status," pointed out WAD.
