Bodies take anti-drug vow, CM warns peddlers

Different organisations of Maram community in Senapati district have extended their support to the 'war on drug' campaign of the state government and took the pledge in front of chief minister N Biren to make their areas drug-free zone.
A delegation of Maram Union, Maram Women's Union and Maram Students' Union along with chiefs of different Maram villages submitted their letter of support to chief minister N Biren at the latter's secretariat office here on Monday and declared prohibition of any sorts of drugs in their areas.
Interacting with the media on the occasion, CM Biren said that his government's war on drugs campaign might hurt some individuals but the initiative is not in his personal interest.
Making it clear that the mission is to shield the youth from the menace of drugs and substance abuse, he said number of orphaned children is increasing in the state due to the menace of drug abuse, which also creates social unrest While hailing the stand of Maram community, CM Biren also stressed the need for launching anti-drug movement in every locality before it is too late.
The CM also assured the delegation of expediting works on water supply projects.
Construction of SDO office and police station will begin soon and other infrastructure including health centres will be developed in the area, he affirmed and confided that the government is in the process of recruiting doctors so that there is no lack of healthcare professional and facilities even in the remote areas of the state.
The government is taking up stringent measures to root out drug trades in the state.
Smuggling and trafficking of drugs is akin to committing genocide and the government will not tolerate such inhuman acts, he said and further advised against any attempt to incite the public as and when actions are initiated against drug smugglers.
He also urged drug smugglers to voluntarily surrender before the law takes its own course of action.
The CM also mentioned about the arrest of two officials in connection with issuing fake land holding documents in Waithou reserved forest areas and asserted that the government will take up every possible measure to conserve and protect reserved and protected forest areas.
He also stated that the government will never compromise on issues pertaining to corruption and destruction of forest areas.
