Imphal, May 30 2022:
A non-native labourer died and four others were critically injured after unidentified miscreants triggered a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) inside a community hall at Sapam Mayai Leikai in Khongjom, today at around 1.30 am.
The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Mahato (21) from Khriatabad, West Bengal while the persons who sustained injuries have been identified as Aroop Mandal (30), Souvik Patra (18), Aporva Mandal (25) and Rajesh Ramaanik (19), all from West Bengal.
Reportedly, the blast took place when the workers were asleep at the community hall.
The five workers were engaged by a private company to construct a water tank.
A case has been registered at Khongjom police station.
Denouncing the bomb attack, sit in protests were staged at Sapam Mayai Leikai Keithel and Mamang Leikai Waiting Shed in Khongjom.
The protesters held placards which read " Don't threaten the civilians," "We Want Peace," and "We Condemn Killing of Labourers" among others.
One of the protesters said that carrying out such an inhumane attack on the people who came to make ends meet with the little money they earn cannot be condoned.
Urging the perpetrators to clarify the motive of the attack at the earliest, the protester urged all to not make the labourers a scapegoat for any dispute.
