Iron Lady donates cash, book

Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on an indefinite fast demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958, has donated Rs 3 lakhs to Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur branch and Rs 1 lakh to Mumbai-based peace activist Dr.Leo Rebello.
This was stated by Dr..YMohen, Secretary IRCS Manipur branch at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club here today.
Dr.Mohen along with two other volunteers of IRCS Manipur branch received the donation from the Iron Lady at a meeting with her this morning.
She also presented a copy of Dr.Leo Rebello's book 'World Without Wars', which was subsequently handed over to the Manipur State Library through its Technical Assistant Chingakham Ibempishak and staff member Yumnam Chanchal.
As expressed by Dr..YMohen, Sharmila has donated the book to the State Library as she felt the book will be beneficial to bring peace to the society.
Feeling satisfaction over the works of Dr.Rebello, Irom Sharmila appreciates him for his yearning for peace and for helping the poor and neglected particularly patients with Blood Cancer, said Dr.Mohen.
Dr.Rebello, who has written several books, gave the opportunity for reading the book by sending the same to Irom Sharmila, who after digesting the book thoroughly handed over to the library for public reading.
The legendary hunger striker had earlier planned to donate a sum of rupees four lakhs to the International Committee for Red Cross through the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union.
However, it was declined for want of approval from the ICRC headquarters in Geneva.
This time she has donated the same amount to the IRCS and the writer.
