Imphal, May 14 2014 :
Foreign experts have been roped in to study feasibility of Waishel Maril canal for development of a waste water treatment and management plant under the funding of foreign agencies.
The 22-kilometre-long Waishel Maril runs through several places in Imphal West and Bishnupur districts.
The canal is responsible for causing flash floods in certain low-lying areas of Imphal during the monsoon season.
Head of South Korea-based Sung Engineering Company Limited Dr Mung and US-based waste water management expert Dr Sashikumar Mazumdar would arrive here on May 19 to study the Waisel Maril.
Waishel Maril runs through Ward No.7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 of Imphal Municipal Council, Patsoi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa, Nambol and Mayang Imphal assembly constituencies.
The canal is also linked with Nambul River at the villages of Mongsangei, Langthabal Makha Leikai, Hiyangthang, Irom Meijrao, Leimapokpam, Thounaojam, Pukhrambam, Sanjenbam and Leimakha.
There is no intake point for any water supply scheme in the Waishel Maril, though it is used for irrigational purposes.
Moreover, most drains in Imphal area directly flow into this canal.
Back in the first week of April last month, the scientists of Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) assessed the pollution level in Waisel Maril.
Subsequently, the MPCB officials have requested the experts from South Korea and US to study the feasibility of the canal for development of a waste water treatment and management plant.
Presently, Waisel Maril is being polluted by various establishments including workshops, factories, schools, colleges and airport.
The canal flows only during the rainy season; otherwise it is almost stagnant.
The visiting foreign experts would closely study the Waisel Maril and prepare a project to mitigate the pollution level and prevent occurrence of flash floods during rainy season.
The project to be prepared by the foreign experts would include establishment of waste water treatment and management plant, which is likely to be funded by foreign agencies.
