Tribute paid to Gambhir Singh

Imphal, January 09 2014:
Maharaja Gambhir Singh (1788-1834), also known as Chinglen Nongdrenkhomba, who successfully drove out the Burmese invaders from Manipur to end the period known as Seven years Devastation (Chahi Taret Khuntakpa) in the history of Manipur, was fondly remembered on his 180th death anniversary observed by various organizations today.
The state level observance was organized by State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture and Kangla Fort Board at Maharaja Gambhir Singh Memorial Complex located at Langthabal/Canchipur with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi as Chief Guest and PHE Minister I Hemochandra as President.
Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, MLA of Langthabal A/C Karam Shyam, MLA of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa A/C RK Anand, MLA of Karong A/C Dr Alexander Pao and MLA of Wangjing Tentha A/C P Brojen also attended the observance as Guests
of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Ibobi said that Langthabal/Canchipur is an important historical place of the State.
Maharaja Bheigyachandra once ruled the State from Canchipur as the Capital.
The contributions made by Maharaja Gambhir Singh should not be forgotten by the present day Manipuris, the Chief Minister averred.
He further said that the State Government had faced several problems while trying to develop the Memorial Complex of Maharaja Gambhir Singh.
The Complex would be developed furthermore as a tourist destination with financial assistance from the Centre.
The Imphal-Moreh Road from MU 1st Gate to Lilong would also be developed in tiptop condition as part of the Look East Policy, the Ibobi noted.
Floral tribute and gun salute were also given in honour of Maharaja Gambhir Singh.
Meanwhile, the 180th death anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh was also observed by United People's Front (UPF) as "Reconsolidation Day" at Manipur Press Club here with ex-Minister RV Mingthing as Chief Guest and President of UPF BM Yaima Shah as President.
President of Zeliangrong Union (AMN) Amu Kamei and Tongbram Gulamjat were Guests of Honour of the observance.
Speaking on the occasion, ex-Minister Mingthing said that everyone must join hands to create a "Unified Manipur" with people from both hills and plains living together in peace and harmony.
Leaders of various civil society organizations of the State also attended the observance and paid floral tribute to Maharaja Gambhir Singh.
