Thoubal, September 26 2014 :
Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam has claimed that the assailant, who kidnapped and killed a Manipur Police commando yesterday at Khetrigao Sabal Leikai, was one of the escort personnel of a legislator.
Gaikhangam, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, disclosed it to the media at the office complex of Thoubal district Deputy Commissioner on Friday.
Gaikhangam was among some Congress leaders who came to the office to file nomination paper for party candidate E Dwijamani Singh who is contesting the October 17 by-election to Hiyanglam constituency of Thoubal district.
He said unwanted incidents often cropped up among the 30,000 odd security forces including the Village Defence Force (VDF) of the state.
Gaikhangam claimed that the accused in the killing of the police commando is one of the escort personnel of a legislator.
The accused is a drug abuser who has record of being a rogue jawan, he claimed without mentioning the name of his force.
The accused has been identified and so he will be nabbed soon, he said.
According to police reports, an unidentified gun man last night hijacked a police commando vehicle along with its driver in front of PCTC fuel station here and later shot and killed the driver identified as Elangbam Joykumar, 42, at Khetrigao Sabal Leikai in Imphal East.
The incident took place around 8:30 pm.
A team of VDF personnel were conducting frisking and checking in front of the PWD office when they got hold of the gunman who fled the site in a passenger auto.
In Manipur, the VDF handle low profile crimes.
Police reports said the VDF personnel chased the auto in which the gunman was travelling when another team of police commandos who were on duty in front of the PCTC fuel station tried to stop the passenger vehicle.
But the gunman opened fire on the commandos and then hijacked the commando vehicle (Rakshak) with its driver and fled.
The assailants reportedly killed the commando with an MP-5 rifle he took away from his escort team.
He also took away one 9 mm pistol from the slain commando.
Sources, however, said the gunman involved in the killing of the commando is one of the escort personnel of Hill Area Committee Chairman Dr Chaltolien Amo.
The sources named him as Thangkhensong, a jawan belonging to 1st India Reserve Battalion (IRB).
He hails from Churachandpur district's Vengnuan Veng, they said.
