UNC calls total shutdown in Naga inhabited areas

Senapati, August 14 2026: The United Naga Council (UNC) has called a 24 hour emergency total shutdown in all Naga districts and Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur following the killing of two Nagas at Langka village in Kangpokpi district with effect from 11 pm today.

In a statement, the UNC strongly condemned the "barbaric and calculated attack" allegedly carried out by KNF-P militants on the occasion of Naga Independence Day.

According to the UNC, four Naga villagers were targeted in the attack.

Wiriliangbou Chawang (35) was shot dead on the spot, while Kawidinang Abonmai (54), succumbed to abdominal injuries while being taken to hospital.

Namthiulungbou Prinmai (45), sustained a groin injury, while Maliangjinang Abonmai (50), suffered injuries to his chest and arm.

The UNC stated that the violence on Naga Independence Day was a direct challenge to the Naga people, their identity and their right to self-determination.

The UNC also said it had taken serious note of recurring incidents of arson, provocation and obstruction reported in the region in recent days, including the August 10 attack on Tokpa Naga village, where at least 10 houses were set ablaze.

The Naga body further expressed concern over questions surrounding the Kailenjang incident and the alleged obstruction of security forces and goodwill missions, stating that such acts were deliberate attempts to create conflict, confusion and fear among the people.

Denouncing all acts of violence, arson and deliberate provocation, UNC urged the competent authorities to conduct thorough and impartial investigations into all such incidents, identify the actual perpetrators and take appropriate legal action without delay.

In solidarity with the bereaved families and in protest against these heinous crimes, the UNC declared an emergency total shutdown in all Naga districts and Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur from 11 pm on August 14, 2026, to 11 pm on August 15, 2026 .

During the shutdown, all shops, business establishments, offices, institutions and non-essential activities will remain closed.

Emergency services, including medical and fire services, as well as other essential services, will be exempted.

The UNC appealed to the public to extend full cooperation and observe the shutdown in a disciplined and peaceful manner.

It also appealed to all Naga citizens to remain calm, united and peaceful.

The Naga People's Organisation (NPO), Senapati has endorsed the emergency shutdown.

In a press note, the NPO said that the attack carried out on the sacred occasion of Naga Independence Day was a grave affront to the Naga people and has caused profound grief, anguish and resentment among the people of Senapati and beyond.

Accordingly, the Organisation urged all constituent bodies, affiliated organisations, village authorities, civil society organisations, business establishments, institutions, transporters and the general public within Senapati to strictly observe the total shutdown.
