Convoy capacity hiked 381 loaded trucks arrive from Jiri

Imphal, August 13 2026: In a significant step that could ease difficulties facing stranded drivers, the CRPF has increased convoy capacity and started escorting 424 loaded trucks and tankers from Jiribam to Imphal today, even as 381 loaded vehicles which left Jiribam on August 11 reached Imphal this evening.

400 of the vehicles are goods carrying trucks and 24 are fuel tankers.

These vehicles are being escorted by two convoys of security personnel.

Normally, a convoy of security forces carries only 150 vehicles.

The increase in the vehicle capacity came a day after a stranded driver was found dead at Jiribam, and amid Transporter's and Drivers' Council's ultimatum to the State Government to bring in the stranded vehicles in bulk.

Notably, the TDC had said that the stranded trucks in batches of 500 would start moving towards Imphal with or without security escorts from Monday if the Government fails to bring them in bulk.

On the other hand, a security convoy escorting 271 empty vehicles which left Imphal today failed to reach Jiribam.

While welcoming the increase in the convoy capacity, TDC president Hijam Ranjit has meanwhile urged the State Government to put pressure on the NHIDCL to swiftly repair the damaged sections of the NH-37 .

While the convoy capacity has been increased, the damaged sections of the highway are still hindering movement of the vehicles, he said.

Repairing the damaged sections on a war footing will cut the travel time, and ease traffic on the highway, he said, seeking the attention of both the Government and the NHIDCL .
