CJFD foils training programme ahead of census

Imphal, August 14 2026: A training programme of census enumerators and supervisors held today at Moirang College was thwarted by protesters.

Notably, the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has already announced a complete boycott of all census-related activities.

On learning that a training programme in connection with census operations was being planned at Moirang College, JFD volunteers of Students' Wing moved to the vicinity of the college.

They found the college guarded by a police team.

As the students tried to enter the college, shouting the slogan "No NRC, No Census", the police personnel locked the college gate.

As the protesters attempted to open the gate, a tense standoff ensued between the two sides for a brief period.

When the police personnel were caught in the stand off at the front gate, some other students sneaked into the college from the rear.

Even after they went inside the college campus, police blocked their way to the training hall.

Nonetheless, the JFD Students' Wing members breached past the police barricade and went inside the training hall.

Inside the training hall, the trainees were found awaiting arrival of officers concerned to start the training session.

he protesters immediately shouted to the trainees to leave the place and go back.

Not knowing what to do, the officials assigned to undergo the training left the training hall and went out of the college campus.

The protesters even forced the trainees to hold placards printed with the words "No NRC, No Census" .

The police personnel deployed at the college tried to persuade the officials not to leave the college but the officials, constrained by the students' protest, left the college.

Later, the JFD Students' Wing volunteers who thwarted the census training programme were arrested by police not long after they left the college.

The arrested students were detained at Moirang police station.

They were later released.

JFD Students' Wing convenor Naorem Wangamba reiterated that no census exercise should be conducted with first updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the displaced citizens are resettled.

The Government must acknowledge that the ongoing movement is tied to the future of Manipur, he added.
