JMCC demands halt to Census exercise

Thoubal, August 14 2026: The Joint Meitei Co-ordinating Committee (JMCC), a joint body of 18 clubs from Thoubal Haokha, Kiyam Siphai, Waithou and Thoubal Khunou, staged a sit-in-protest on Friday demanding that the process for conducting the Census in Manipur be halted until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated.

The protesters urged the State Government to refrain from commencing the Census exercise, scheduled to begin in Manipur from August 17, until the NRC updating process is completed.

Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, JMCC Women Wing secretary Akoijam Chitreshwori appealed to the government to immediately halt the proposed Census exercise.

She warned that if the government attempts to forcibly conduct the Census before updating the NRC, the committee would extend full support to the ongoing agitation of the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) .

The protesters also raised slogans demanding that the NRC be updated before any Census exercise is undertaken, including "No NRC, No Census" .
