Imphal, August 14 2026:
The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) intensified its agitation against the proposed Census exercise in Manipur, with its volunteers attempting to march towards Lok Bhavan here today.
The protest, which entered its fifth day, was organised to press the demand that the Census should not be conducted in the State without first addressing issues related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Internally Displaced People (IDPs) .
Members of the JFD maintained that conducting the Census without resolving concerns over the demographic imbalance and the status of displaced people could have serious implications for Manipur.

Participated by Meiteis, Nagas and Meitei Pangals, the protest march began from Wangkhei Angom Leikai (WAL Club) by raising slogans such as "No NRC, No Census" .
They, the protesters, however were stopped by Central and State security personnel while attempting to proceed towards Lok Bhavan near Palace Compound Traffic Point.
Around 15 volunteers were then allowed to meet Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and place their demands.
Reportedly, the meeting lasted around 90 minutes.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that they had urged the Governor to stop the initiative being taken up by the Government to commence the Census exercise.
According to him, the Governor told the JFD members that it is the responsibility of the State Government to send a recommendation to the Centre if it wishes to postpone the Census exercise.
He also said that the Governor agreed to discuss the issue with Chief Minister Y Khemchand and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam.
He further said that the Governor informed them that he had apprised Union Home Minister Amit Shah of the concerns surrounding the Census exercise.
Saying that the JFD would not withdraw its movement against the Census as the Governor had not assured them that the exercise would be postponed, he urged enumerators and supervisors to refrain from attending training sessions of the Census.
