Kangpokpi, February 23 2018: To uplift lives of socially and economically challenged women is not an easy task.

Lots of hard work, dedication and determination are required to bring these distressed women (widows, HIV positive) on par with the society.

Swadhar Greh Centre, Thangkanphai in Saikul Sub-division Headquarter in Kangpokpi district has rehabilitated 35 women including widows, HIV+ patients by providing maximum care and services.

The centre run by ST/SC Backward Women and Children Development Organization in Rural Area, Thoubal Khunou, was established in 2017 with an aim to eater the primary needs of women in difficult circumstances under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt of India.

The centre provides primary needs such as shelter, food, clothing, medical treatment and legal aids.

The centre also provide vocational trainings in weaving, various craftsmanship such as making of baskets from 'Kouna' .

The 38 Assam Rifles provides free tailoring training to the women at the centre.

The women engaged themselves in various rehabilitative activities supervised by the centre.

The activities at the centre kept the women occupied making them forget their difficulties and worries.

The activities at the centre helps restore the lives of the women economically and emotionally.

The women help each other, eat together, sleep together, work, learn and enjoy together in the centre.

Their togetherness and the environment they live in provides them a sense of belonging and security.

All these factors make these women overcome their grief and problems, said officials at the centre.

The centre engaged six staffs including superintendent, counsellor, office assistant cum accountant, helper, chawkidar and a nurse who caters to the needs of the women.

Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai and other CSOs of Saikul, school headmasters, chiefs, religious leaders and many in the area lauded the two souls behind the success of the centre - L Rajeshwori Devi, secretary, ST/SC Backward Women and Children Development Organization in Rural Area, Thoubal Khunou and Mary Hmangte, superintendent of the centre.

The selfless efforts and determination of the two women has made the centre one of the most successful among 25 Swadhar Greh Centres in the State, hailed the CSOs and many other.

L Rajeshwori Devi exceedingly spoke well of Mary Hmangte for her sincerity, truthfulness and dedication and lauded the unvarying support of her (Mary Hmangte) family particularly her husband Sonneithang Hmangte and her son.

The husband Sonneithang Hmangte and her son even spend their daily wages to support the women at the centre, said L Rajeshwori.

Visibly emotional Mary thanked her husband and her family for their untiring support in making her dream of uplifting women become a reality.

She also thanked L Rajeshwori for her loyalty and commitment towards the centre.

Interestingly, it has been learned that no financial support has been received by the Swadhar Greh Centre, Thangkanphai since its establishment as the funds is yet to be released by the State Government.

Many in the centre has hope that the State Government will soon release the funds.
