'Literary knowledge indispensable for scribes'

Meghachandra Kongbam, Director, Information & Public Relations released the 11th Edition of "Saklon", an annual International Manipuri magazine today at Directorate of Information and Public Relations auditorium at Moirangkhom.
The magazine edited by Sahitya Akademi Awardee, Saratchand Thiyam and published by Sahitya Thoupang Lup (Sathoulup) is dedicated to Mahakavi Hijam Anganghal Singh as part of a yearlong observance to commemorate his contribution to the Manipuri literature.
Speaking as chief guest, Meghachandra Kongbam asserted that literature has a strong correlation with journalism and to become a successful journalist, students of journalism should know the word power of literature.
He opined that in-depth knowledge of literature is very important to polish journalistic skills.
Stating that literature is the mirror of the society, he said the people of the literary world highlight their works through different media to connect with the masses.
Appreciating the role of Sahitya Thoupang Lup, he said it is a platform to widen the knowledge of Manipuri literature among the people residing in different parts of the world.
Editor of the magazine, Sharatchand Thiyam said that Saklon binds together the Manipuri people residing in the different corners of the world.
He said that Mahakavi Hijam Anganghal Singh took a big role in promoting Manipuri language and culture.
The latest issue of the magazine is dedicated to Hijam Anganghal Singh to recognise his contribution in Manipuri Literature, he added.
He said the objective of publishing the magazine is to pass on the valuable assets of the older generation to the present generation.
The function was also attended by students of State Institute of Journalism and Manipur University, members of Sathoulup and staff of Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
