Imphal, September 21 2022:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) treated a 69-year-old patient from Myanmar with severe osteoarthritis of both knee joints.
SHRI Managing Director, K Palin informed this during a press meet held today at the auditorium hall of the medical institute.
He said that the bilateral knee replacement surgery was conducted successfully on September 16 last and added that the patient from Myanmar is now able to walk.
Saying that the surgery was another milestone achievement of SHRI as it was the first of its kind in the hospital, Palin conveyed that the surgery was performed by the orthopedics team of SHRI, led by Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Iboyaima Phuritshabam.
Further claiming that over 2500 patients from Myanmar have already been treated at SHRI, the Managing Director exuded confidence that more people from Myanmar will come if there is direct flight between Imphal and Mandalay.
He said that SHRI had launched several initiatives to enhance the relationship between the institute and Myanmar, including the 'Mission Myanmar' which conducted 130 cleft lip and palate surgeries, 179 cataract surgeries and 32 keyhole surgeries to Myanmar people at free of cost.
He continued that SHRI had also provided free training on keyhole surgery, critical care nursing and operation theatre technology to the doctors and nurses of Monywa General Hospital in Myanmar under the Shija Overseas Training Program.
Pointing out that people from Myanmar face some difficulties while coming to Manipur as the Indo-Myanmar border is being sealed and have to take permission for travelling here from Myanmar Consulate General at Kolkata, the Managing Director added that Manipur could be a hub of Medical tourism in Southeast Asia when the process for travelling between Manipur and Myanmar has been eased.
