Anti-drug awareness programme held

Under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chandel organised a one-day anti-drug awareness programme on "Effective Implementation of Strategies toward Eradication of Drug Menace" as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration at South-East Manipur Higher Secondary School, Kapaam in Chandel district on Wednesday.
Chandel DLSA retainer lawyer Jacky Lucy elaborated about legal service institutions in the state, highlighted consequences and harmful effects of drug abuse, elaborated on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and quantum of punishment for illicit trafficking and abusing of drugs.
On the other hand, Community Network for Empowerment (CONE) legal coordinator S Irananda Singh explained about various types of drugs and pointed out to the gathering that location of Manipur close to the infamous Golden Triangle (borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar) poses constant threat to youngsters of the state.
He deliberated on the various challenges faced by an individual due to drug abuse and its effects to the individual as well as the society.
CONE youth coordinator (drugs) Babina Sanabam conducted an interactive session with the students who participated in the programme and sensitised them about the harmful effects of drug menace and encouraged them to avoid drug abuse.
