Ukhrul, June 03 2018:
As always, people in the hilly areas suffered the most during rainy season.
This is not new to the villages under the Sambu Raiping Long (SRL) of Ukhrul district.
15 villages under the SRL have been facing immense hardship for years due to a poorly maintained PMGSY road that connects the villages with the Ukhrul District Headquarters.
And it has been worst for the people of Kachouphung, the last of the 15 villages.
The rain these past few days have created havoc in the region.
Concerned over the dilapidated condition of the road, the SRL, as always, has banned movement of heavy vehicles on the road.
People have been suffering and enduring all kinds of hardship because of the negligence of the concerned department and agencies, said Nathan, president of the SRL condemning the department concerned and the Government for their years of lack of interest and ignorance.
Despite 'persistent' appeals made, the concerned department has failed to address the problems and hardship faced by the people of the villages during the rainy season, he said.
Debris and mud has clogged the road and is almost impossible for vehicles to ply freely.
Most of the time, people/passengers have to pull or push their vehicles to overcome obstacles.
The road is unsafe for two wheelers.
The road is clogged with water and mud and is very slippery.
Driving two wheeler on the road may injure people or may even prove fatal, said the president.
"During dry season, travelling from Shirui to Mapum village took about 2-3 hours only but, now in the rainy season it takes a whole day," said a villager of Zingsui.
Last week a ZEO team, who were on official duty, got their vehicle stuck somewhere on the road.
They struggled the whole day to get their way, he said.
People are waiting for the Government to reconstruct and blacktop the road,
said a villager.
