President of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Ph Deban has said that it is the duty of the present and the future generations to safeguard the unity and the territorial integrity of Manipur, a land whose integrity has been safeguarded by the people of the hills and the valley together.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a social service held at Kekrupat today under the aegis of AMUCO and United Committee Manipur (UCM), in connection with the 17th The Great June Uprising, Unity Day 2018, Ph Deban, who is also the vice chairman of the organising committee, said that ever since the cease fire agreement was signed between the Central Government and the NSCN (IM) in l997, the people of Manipur have always been apprehensive about the impacts the agreement might have on the territorial integrity of the State.
As such, a public protest was held on August 4,1997 and various resolutions were adopted.
Various memoranda were also submitted demanding the Central Government to stop playing divide and rule policy in Manipur, he added.
He continued that on June 14, 2011, the words 'without territorial limit' was included in the cease fire agreement which led to widespread protest in Manipur eventually leading to the June 18 incident.
AMUCO and UCM have been observing the Great June Uprising, Unity Day ever since, in memory of the incident and the people who sacrificed their lives, Deban explained and appealed to all the people of the State participate in the programme.
Numerous tree saplings were also planted as a part of the social service.
