Legal awareness programme on Environment organised

A one day district level legal workshop on sensitisation of wildlife, forest and environment laws was held on Saturday at Kiyamba Shanglen in Bishnupur.
Honorary Wildlife Warden and co-ordinator IBCN Manipur RK Birjit Singh, Conservator of Forests Manipur L Joykumar Singh, Deputy Director Environment Department Manipur Dr T Brajakumar Singh and Deputy Conservator of Forests and District Forest Officer Bishnupur RK Amarjit Singh spoke at the event as resource persons about various Acts pertaining to the conservation of environment and wildlife such as Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Environment Protection Act 1986 and Forest Conservation Act 1980.Resource persons also covered several topics and emphasised on the importance of Wildlife Conservation with special reference to the State of Manipur, roles of enforcement agencies, effect of pollution, mining etc on environment and various directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) etc.
Speaking at the event about the introduction of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Chief Judicial Magistrate Monalisa Maibam stated that the Act was introduced by the 42nd Amendment Bill acknowledging the impact of natural habitat lost and merciless killings that has drive many wildlife to extinction and near extinction or threatened.
Chairman State Environment Impact Assessment Authority Manipur Dr Kh Shamungou sensitised the people about the changing climate and impact of global warming on the environment.
The State has many rare flora and fauna such as Shiroi Lily and Sangai.
How long will these beauties lasts given the present rate of climate change and human activities that has altered and shrink the natural habitats asked Dr Kh Shamungou emphasising on the importance of conservation of environment and mitigating climate change.
Scientists are of the opinion that one species extinct every hour at present as against one species every 1000 years some 2000 years ago from now, he said.
The World Environment Day on June 5 this year will be observed under the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution, If you can�t reuse it, refuse it".
Chief Judicial Magistrate Bishnupur District Monalisa Maibam, Chairman State Environment Impact Assessment Authority Manipur Dr Kh Shamungou, Deputy Conservator of Forest and DFO Bishnupur RK Amarjit Singh, SDO Bishnupur Lalithambigai K, SDO Nambol Bobo Chandam, SDPO Bishnupur Binoy Chongtham and Honorary Wildlife Warden Bishnupur and Principal Kumbi College K Jugeshore Singh attended the awareness programme as presidium members.
The awareness programme was jointly sponsored by Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) Manipur, Centre for Conservation of Nature and Cultivation of Science (CCNCS), Environment Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum, (ESRFPF), Thoubal Youth Development Association (TYDA) Thoubal, Pole Star Guardian Association Thinungei (POSGAT) and Global Science Club Khoijuman and organised by Bishnupur Forest Division.
