Awareness campaign on climate change

A public campaign cum awareness programme on climate change was held today at Sagang Bazar, Ccpur district.
The programme was jointly organised by North East Dialogue Forum, Samaritan Resource Centre, Manipur and New Life Foundation, Moirang and SAC Borayangbi.
Vomneithang Kom, Alen Gangte, Pastor L Solomon, Pastor John, Amit Kumar, Lamminsang, M Mang Telen, and Langmaichung attended the programme as the presidium members.
President of Komrem Union, Lalkhomang Serto, Project Manager of Centre for Social Development Babycha Mangsatabam and Manipur's correspondent of Assam Tribune, Sobhapati Samom were the resource persons.
Delivering a speech on Climate Change: Political and Media perspective, Sobhapati Samom said that rampant clearance of jungles and deforestation led to climate change in the State while citing the recent water woes faced by the State as one of the results of climate change.
He said rampant cutting down of trees in the forest has affected the ecosystem.
Due to climate change, many farmers have been forced to shift their occupations, he said while stressing the need for collective efforts of the people to save the environment from further degradation.
Babycha Mangsatabam spoke on Climate Change and Gender.
She underlined that unrestrained use of fertiliser and chemicals is also responsible for climate change.
A mass rally was also held at Sagang Bazar to create environmental awareness among the people of the area.
