Thoubal, May 13 2014 :
Seven wooden shops were reduced to cinders at Yairipok Bazar in Thoubal district when a devastating fire broke out last night around 11 resulting in the loss of properties worth about Rs 50 lakh.
The fire is suspected to originate from electric short circuit.
The shops were reduced to ashes although fire tenders from Imphal, Yairipok and Thoubal swung into action to control the fire.
The fire was fuelled by the explosion of a gas cylinder kept inside a rice hotel, sources said.
Two jewellery shops, three grocery shops, a rice hotel and a video parlour were completely destroyed by the fire.
