Lamka, May 13 2014 :
The Gorkha Rifles, at the centre of storm for their alleged forcible use of interior bound passenger vehicle drivers to withdraw cash from ATM booths in town, has today settled the Muallum case that was taken up by the AAP candidate in Outer Manipur PC, K Zou, after the GR expressed regrets over the incident as per the tribal customary laws.
K Zou had on Sunday said the Army unit posted at Muallum had tortured a security guard of the HDFC bank on ground that some of their cash were missing.
The GR men were told by the bus driver ordered to withdraw cash using 7 ATM cards that he had entrusted the security guard to do the job.
Questioning the rationale behind the army men forcing drivers to serve their personal needs, K Zou had demanded an apology within two days or face case in the Supreme Court if they fail to do so.
As his dateline was to expire today, 1/11 GR delegates reportedly headed by a Commanding Officer and the victim's family along with the AAP leader held talks at the victim's residence at Kamdou Veng and arrived at a settlement around 2.30 pm.
The Army conformed to all tribal customary practices to express their regret, said K Zou later today.
"They (Army) could no longer hide from the truth.
They have approached us and accordingly we discussed the issue on our customary lines and arrived at a settlement," said Zou adding the victim who suffered a fractured rib will be treated by the Army.
