Delay in case proceedings inflict more trauma on victims, families: Sobita M

A one day sensitization program on women and child issue "Questioning the future of Manipur" was held at Khongman Zone III, Imphal East on August 24 .
As per a statement, the program was jointly organized by Khongman Gram Panchayat, Khongman Apunba VLF, Khongman Mangjil VLF, Ima Panthoibi VLF, promoted by (Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission) associated with (PRI, CBO) convergence project and Women Action for Development (WAD) .
Around 200 people attended the program.
Dignitaries present at the event include Dr Dhanabir Laishram, social scientist; Sobita Mangsatabam, secretary, WAD; Advocate Kamala, Legal Assistant (WAD) and Moirangthem Nungsirei Devi, Pradhan, Khongman GP.

Speakong on the occasion, Sobita Mangsatabam stated that there are altogether 104 cases of crimes against women and children documented by WAD from local newspapers between January 1 to August 23 .
Out of these 104 cases, 28 are rape cases (where 21 cases concern a minor girl), 2 gang rape, 1 suicide after rape, 3 murders, 7 suicides, 3 suspicious deaths, 3 life attempts, 25 missing etc.
However, the sexual assault cases among minors according to Social Welfare Department are 150 within 4 months (January- April), she shared.
Expressing deep concerns she stated that the trends of violence and crime against women is alarming.
Further, delay and regular postponing of the case proceedings inflict more trauma on the victims and their family.
She also appealed to the State Government to take initiative to protect children, women victims by delivering justice without any delay.
Advocate Kamla delivered a speech on Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act 2012, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 etc.
She also cautioned the public, mainly women and parents to take care of their children from becoming victims or accused in the future.
Dhanabir Laishram said that men and women should share equal responsibility in the family.
The contribution made by women socially, economically and politically towards the betterment of the society should be given due recognition, he added.
