No compulsion on learning Hindi under NEP: Minister

While reiterating that there is no compulsion on learning Hindi or any language according to the new National Education Policy (NEP), education minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh has said that anyone can learn as many languages according his/her desire but no compulsion on a particular language or subject.
According to the National Education Policy, there is no mandate on learning Hindi subject but it is of one's own choice, Basanta said and stressed the need for learning one's own ethnic languages.
The minister made the clarification during the annual Freshers' Day celebration of Asufii Christian Institute (ACI), Senapati, wherein he also inaugurated a science laboratory of the school.
Lauding the institute for striving to ensure all necessary scientific equipment for science students, Th Basanta urged senior students to treat freshers as own brothers by helping them out in adjusting to the environment, guiding them and being their mentors in a positive way.
The minister then lauded the freshers who had taken part in the Mr & Miss Fresher competition.
Calling the students as bright and positive people, the minister urged all to go forward in life and enjoy the journey as a good human being.
To work hard and to be disciplined is the most important thing in life as students and as human being, he said while urging them to keep learning in life.
The minister also stressed on the need to learn soft skills which means knowing how to communicate, how to debate, how to be team player, how �to manage one's time which are the qualities required to be successful in life.
He said that soft skills would enhance the knowledge which one learns in classrooms.
ACI principal Rev Loli Kape, in his welcome address, stated that it was the long-cherished dream of the institution to have the education minister at school's annual function.
Mao MLA Losii Dikho, who is also the chairman of school governing board, expressed his happiness on seeing increasing number of new students coming to the institute from different places and institutions.
Recalling how he started the ACI back in 2010, the MLA stated that it was not an easy job with not enough resources, no adequate land.
Additional director (education) Alfred Khaute was also present at the event.
Earlier, the education minister inaugurated the college building cum college Foundation Day of St Xavier's College, Maram Khunou, Senapati.
