Ukhrul, November 07 2015 :
The inter-village road from Halang to Paoyi via Paorei, Paocham and Varangrai constructed under PMGSY phase-IX is in deplorable condition as the road has been left completely abandoned without proper maintenance by the construction agency, reports our Correspondent.
The PGMSY road is the only route for the villagers which connects the Ukhrul district headquarters.
Transportation has been severely affected which in turn has paralysed the daily marketing activities of vegetable, charcoal, firewood traders.
During a brief interaction with this Correspondent, Luireingam of Paorei village, a vegetables seller, said that majority of the villagers depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
But due to the deplorable road condition of a 17 km Halang-Paoyi village road, villagers are running deficits since they have to spend more on vehicle fares and hiring charges.
He mentioned that last year, he earned about Rs 50000 by selling vegetables at Ukhrul, but this year due inaccessibility of road during the monsoon season, local bean Longyathei which is a huge demand at Ukhrul market could not be traded successfully in spite of good production.
According to him, most of the vehicle owners declined to operate from Halang to Paoyi village because of the poor road condition.
In case the drivers agree, they would normally ask Rs 1500 to Rs 2500 as a hiring charge.
In spite of huge demand for fresh vegetables at Ukhrul market, villagers cannot afford to transport the vegetables.
He appealed the work agency concerned to repair the PGMSY road from Halang to Paoyi for the convenience of the villagers.
Social activist Sorin Vashum said that the area village headmen have repeatedly asked the work agency concerned to repair the road on different occasions.
