In view of the many disputes and contestations regarding the 27-letter Meitei Mayek alphabet, an expert committee would be constituted to examine the matter, said Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar.
Basanta Kumar made this statement in the State Assembly today while responding to a policy cut motion raised by Opposition MLAs K Ranjit, Th Lokeshwor and Surjakumar Okram.
The Education Minister said that the 27-letter alphabet currently in use was recommended by a 14-member expert committee in 1978 .
Acting on the recommendation of the expert committee, the State Government approved the alphabet and a gazette notification was published accordingly.
Subsequently, Meitei Mayek was introduced in Classes I and II from 2006. Now Meitei Mayek has almost completely replaced the Bengali alphabet in most educational institutes, he said.
After receiving a representation from one Advocate named Th Jiten regarding the Meitei Mayek alphabet currently in use, the Language and Planning and Implementation Director has been instructed to submit a list of experts.
An order has been already issued to constitute a committee of Meitei Mayek experts, Basanta Kumar added.
