Imphal, June 04 2022:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has once again urged the State Government to send ethno-graphy and socio-economic reports of the Meetei community to the Tribal Affairs Ministry of the Central Government so as to examine if the ethnic group could be enlisted in the Scheduled Tribe list of the Indian Constitution.
A press release issued by WMC, Central Executive Committee claimed that the atmosphere being created by certain people who allegedly claim ownership of Mount Koubru and Thangjing Hill Range has become unbearable to the Meeteis and Nagas who are the indigenous people of Manipur.
The council further claimed that this section of people even intimidates the State Government to not send the reports which are required to be examined to check if Meeteis could be enlisted in the ST list.
Alleging that Meeteis are no longer the rightful citizens of Manipur as the Indian Constitution doesn't recognise them as 'native indigenous people,' the WMC continued that the Meeteis also cannot enjoy the right of a citizen in hill areas which constitute more than 90 per cent of the area of Manipur.
The WMC then urged the State Government to send the two reports so as to make the Meeteis rightful citizens in their own ancient land.
