Imphal, May 12 2013:
Oil tankers engaged in ferrying fuel to IOC's Chingmeirong depot would be fitted with Vehicle Monitoring Units (VMUs).
An official source informed that VMUs would be fitted on oil tankers under the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) introduced by IOC in order to monitor movement of oil tankers.
Around 468 oil tankers are being engaged for ferrying fuel to the Chingmeirong depot.
These include 70 oil tankers engaged in ferrying SK fuel.
The new initiative to fit VMUs on oil tankers would not be restricted to Manipur but cover all oil tankers engaged in transportation of fuel in the entire North East region.
It is being targeted to complete the work of fitting VMUs in all the 568 oil tankers within this year.
In the first phase, 62 SK oil tankers have been fitted with VMUs.
As SK Oil is one of the PDS items, oil tankers carrying SK fuel were given priority by IOC head-office located at Mumbai.

The new initiative would enable IOC officials to track movement of oil tankers and check the practice of playing truant by oil tanker drivers or dilly-dallying on the way.
It would detect very easily if any oil tanker is straying away from its route.
Manipur's monthly quota of SK Oil is 2048 Kls.
According to IOC's own estimate, around 70 oil tankers are needed to bring in the monthly quota to the IOC depot and supply it to agents.
There are many oil tankers which do not report in time at the IOC's depot for their journey to ferry fuel even though they are escorted by CRPF escorts.
Again, oil tankers loaded with SK Oil from Chingmeirong depot do not reach their destinations and several tanks of SK Oil are lost midway.
It was in view of these faulty practices that the IOC took up the new initiative of vehicle tracking system, added the official.
