Imphal, December 14 2022:
A Member of Rajya Sabha and titular king, Leishemba Sanajaoba raised the Indo-Myanmar boundary issue during the Parliament session today and urged the Centre to resolve the dispute once and for all.
Calling the attention of the Centre in a special mention during the session, MP Leishemba Sanajaoba said the boundary between Manipur State and Myanmar has been in dispute since the time of the British and it has dragged on till today.
He said the dispute may be resolved with a bilateral agreement with both countries engaging in talks on the issue.
He pointed out that the dispute arose due to incursion on Manipur land when installing border pillars and fencing.
Border pillar no 64 to 68, 75 to 79, 88 to 95 and old border pillar 80 to 82 are disputed, with the people claiming Manipur has lost huge land areas with these border pillars erected well inside the land belonging to the State.
Leishemba Sanajaoba informed that officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier visited Manipur to look into the dispute.
Further, Chief Minister N Biren Singh had also requested Home Minister Amit Shah for a revisit and again look into the boundary issue.
In the meantime, to save land belonging to Manipur, the people of the border villages have banned border fencing works, he said.
He asserted that the boundary dispute between Myanmar and Manipur was also there during the time of the British.
After independence, India and Myanmar signed a boundary agreement at Rangoon in 1967.However, on the ground, the boundary dispute continued with both the Delhi and Naypyidaw reluctant to actually solve the issue, Leishemba Sanajaoba said.
He then urged the Centre to hold talks with Naypyidaw and bring a lasting solution to the boundary dispute.
