Imphal, November 19 2022:
Tribal Haat Manipur (THAAM) is reportedly planning to organise Tribal Haat Expo with an aim to promote the agricultural produce of the tribal communities in the state and provide a platform for marketing the products.
This was announced by THAAM chairman Ngatangmi Hungyo while speaking to media persons on the sidelines of "Installation Programme of THAAM executive members" which was held at Tarung Women's Hall in Imphal West district on Saturday.
Ngatangmi lamented that the tribal business communities, particularly the tribal street vendors are facing various inconveniences in plying their wares in Imphal due to monopoly on prices by the buyers and further claimed that the hill people who depend for their livelihood on selling horticultural and agricultural crops and artistic works like pottery in Imphal lack appropriate market platform and exposure to sell their products.
This acts as the stumbling block in improving economy of the tribal communities whose main source of livelihood is agriculture and horticulture, he contended.
Pointing out that there are central government schemes which promote the tribal entrepreneurs and artisans, the chairman urged the government to effectively implement the schemes.
When asked about the schedule for host-ing/organising the Tribal Haat Expo, Ngatangmi informed that the tentative schedule for the expo is from January 10 to 16 although the organisers are waiting for approval from the state government.
