Imphal, November 19 2022:
Shija Academy of Health Sciences on Saturday observed World Antimicrobial Awareness Week on the theme of Silent Pandemic of Antimicrobial Resistance: One Health Approach" at the Academy's premises, here.
World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is observed by the WHO every year from November 18 to 24.Speaking on the occasion, Academy's Department of Microbiology Prof and HOD Dr Kh Sulochana Devi pointed out that antimicrobial resistance has become a serious health problem and there is an action available to treat this ineffective disease with antibiotics.
As the microorganisms causing diseases change their genetic makeup almost like a tsunami, they develop antibiotic resistance, which could become un-treatable once it evolves into multi micro-organism infections.
This, in turn, could cause infections to spread in health care centres considering that multi-drug resistant is far greater than healthcare.
Thus, respecting the prescription with reservation of high antibiotics to be substituted with antibiotic policy on ineffectiveness and follow-up treatment along with awareness is imperative to address this issue.
Observing that people consume antibiotics off the counter, Prof Sulochana said that when the dosage is inadequate, it allows the bacteria to build resistance.
Hence, the awareness programme has been organised with the objective of spreading awareness among the masses to prevent antimicrobial resistance with the help of medical practitioners, doctors and others, she added.
