Imphal, December 29 2023:
The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) today submitted a statement on affidavit to the Commission of Enquiry (Manipur Violence) which has been probing the Manipur violence that erupted on May 3, 2023 .
A team of STDCM led by its president Dhiraj Yumnam submitted the affidavit to the Commission of Enquiry at its office at room number 104 of the Hotel Imphal by Classic.
The statement on affidavit was prepared by Advocate Ningombam Bhupendra.
Briefing media persons after submitting the affidavit, Dhiraj Yumnam said that the affidavit gave a detailed clarification to assertion made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several National newspapers that the High Court of Manipur's direction to the State Government to send necessary recommendation for enlistment of Meitei/Meetei in Scheduled Tribe category triggered the Manipur violence.
Establishment of the genesis of the violent conflict is listed in serial number 1 of the Commission of Enquiry's terms of reference.
Any statement made by the Union Home Minister is often regarded as the opinion or view of the Government of India, he said.
"All our efforts would go in vain if everyone has the impression that the High Court's directive triggered the Manipur violence", Dhiraj said.
"We felt it highly necessary to submit an affidavit and prove that the High Court's directive has very little to do with the large-scale violence.
That was why we submitted a statement on affidavit to the Commission of Enquiry", Dhiraj Yumnam said.
