Pink eye outbreak grips Ukhrul

With the outbreak of contagious eye flu in Ukhrul, the rising number of viral conjunctivitis cases has risen sharply in the district.
According to reports from Ukhrul District Medical Department, altogether 89 cases of viral conjunctivitis have been detected in the District Hospital at Hungpung, Ukhrul.
Out of the 89 people infected, around 50 are from Jessami village, according to Jessami village Chairman Anizote.
A special eye camp was also held at Jessami village last week in connection with the outbreak.
Aside from this, the Ukhrul District Medical Department has also informed that many of the infected persons are residents of Ukhrul town while the remaining are from Kalhang, Chingjaroi and Hungpung village.
In this regard, Dr Thotreiwon Juliana, District Surveillance Officer (DSO), Ukhrul shared that the first case was reported in the month of June as per OPD registry record maintained in Ukhrul District Hospital.
Confirming the outbreak of conjunctivitis in the district, the Ukhrul DSO said that the disease, also known as 'Pink Eye', is a highly contagious viral disease.
Three students were diagnosed with conjunctivitis in Ukhrul District Hospital today taking the total number of cases to 89 in the district.
Dr Juliana informed that Ukhrul District Medical Department is all set to organise awareness campaigns on safety and preventive measures of conjunctivitis under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) focusing on the schools of Ukhrul in the first phase.
In case of an eye infection or a suspected case of conjunctivitis, she urged people to consult their doctors and further advised them to isolate themselves in order to prevent the disease from spreading and for public safety.
