2480 Myanmarese immigrants in Manipur: Record

Following union home minister Amit Shah's statements that the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar is closely related to the on going violence in Manipur, a report by the Manipur Police Department has stated that there are officially around 2480 illegal immigrants from Myanmar in five hills districts of the state.
According to the report submitted by Manipur Police IG (Intelligence-NAB) to the commissioner (Home), owing to the political instability in Myanmar, many people have crossed the borders from Myanmar into Manipur illegally.
A verification conducted by the state police found 2480 Myanmarese, who had entered Manipur illegally, in Tengnoupal, Chandel, Churachandpur, Pherzawl and Kamjong.
The report informed that there are around 1147 illegal immigrants from Myanmar staying in 13 different areas of Tengnoupal district; 1175 in 10 areas of Chandel; 154 (two deceased due to COVID) in six areas of Churachandpur; while four people were arrested from two places in Kamjong for smuggling drugs and illegal immigration.
Of the 154 illegal immigrants in Churachandpur district, only 23 people could be identified for verification, while the rest were arrested under the Foreigner Act.
Two later died due to COVID-19 .
While process is underway to provide temporary identity cards to the immigrants from Myanmar, efforts are also being made to prepare shelters with approval of the Home Department.
Additional efforts are also underway to deport the immigrants to Myanmar once the situation in Myanmar stabilises, the report conveyed.
