Imphal, March 22 2024:
Former Chief Minister and CLP leader Okram Ibobi has asserted that freezing the bank accounts of Indian National Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha election is nothing short of dictatorship.
Speaking to the media at Congress Bhavan today, Ibobi said that it is the first time the bank accounts of Indian National Congress (INC) have been frozen.
India is considered as the mother of democracy and the role of the Opposition in a democratic country is immense, the former Chief Minister said and added that BJP has been attacking the INC because it feels insecure.
Claiming that BJP has been scheming to take India towards dictatorship, Ibobi added that the Opposition parties have to be strengthened to reinforce democracy.
He exuded confidence that the INDIA bloc will surely form the next Government at the Centre.
The future of Indian democracy will become uncertain if the BJP returns to power, Ibobi cautioned.
Claiming that Manipur too has dictatorship, the Congress leader sought support of the people to defeat BJP.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, on the other hand, accused the Central Government of scheming to sabotage the image of Indian democracy during their time.
Stating that the Central Government has been attacking the INC repeatedly to cripple the party, Meghachandra said that the fund at the party's bank account is purely white money donated by the people and the party members including MPs and MLAs since the last 20-30 years.
It is the fund at these accounts which have been used to run the party, the MPCC chief said and added that the grand old party, however, could not use Rs 285 crore in its bank accounts because of the freezing.
Deliberately freezing the bank accounts of INC at the time of Lok Sabha election is undemocratic, he added.
