Noney denizens briefed on forest fires

Noney, March 22 2024:
An awareness programme on 'Forest Fire Prevention & Protection cum Incentivising of Villages for Protecting against Forest Fire under FFPM Scheme 2023-.24' was held on Friday at the conference hall of Noney Forest Division office, Noney town.
The programme was attended by Noney divisional forest officer D John Sha, and range forest officer Gonmei Gaisuakmei as the resource persons with the participation of about 30 people including village authority chairmen and secretaries.
Speaking at the event, DFO John Sha highlighted the importance of forests and the role of the villagers in combating forest fires and implementing preventive measures.
A demonstration of SMS alerts on forest fire and registration of mobile number, as well as distribution of safety gear/kits for wildfire fighting and incentive cheques to participants were part of the awareness programme.
It may be mentioned that the Forest Survey of India recorded 1312 forest fires in the state between January and March, 2020.Forest fires are growing rather than diminishing, with the rate in Manipur reaching 49 per cent in recent years.
